Joseph de Groot, M.D.
Spine Surgery
OVERVIEW
Originally from Atlanta, Dr. de Groot attended Marist School, earning Varsity letters in baseball and wrestling. He then graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame, with a degree in Science Business.
Dr. de Groot earned his medical degree from Georgetown University and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the preeminent University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which consistently ranks within the top 10 programs in the country. He continued his training with a fellowship in spine surgery, also at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Upon graduation, he earned the distinct AO Fellow designation, a Switzerland-based accreditation granted to programs that train the world’s top spine surgeons and ensure excellence in both spine research and education.
After fellowship, Dr. de Groot was hired as a clinical professor at the University of Pittsburgh, where he trained residents and fellows and performed a wide array of advanced procedures including trauma with and without spinal cord injuries; large deformities; and degenerative cervical, thoracic and lumbar surgeries. Through his training and experience in an academic Level 1 trauma center, he cultivated expertise in caring for the most complex and atypical patient presentations and problems, applying creativity and skill to each unique case.
Dr. de Groot then returned to his hometown to join Peachtree Orthopedics, where he specializes in cervical, thoracic, and lumbar pathology ranging from disc herniations and spinal stenosis to complex spinal deformities. Dr. de Groot incorporates a variety of surgical techniques into his practice, including both open and minimally invasive outpatient approaches and navigation-based technology. His clinical interests include degenerative, traumatic, and oncologic spinal conditions. Dr. de Groot has also been an active member in the Orthopedic research community, having published articles, authored medical textbook chapters, and presented abstracts and posters at national conferences.
Dr. de Groot is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
In his spare time, Dr. de Groot enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, golfing, reading, and watching Notre Dame football.
