OVERVIEW

Dr McCarthy is a native of West Des Moines, Iowa. He attended the University of Rochester where he played soccer and earned his BA in Biology with a minor in Brain and Cognitive Sciences. He attended medical school at Creighton University, where he was commissioned into the United States Air Force and inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. Following medical school, he completed his orthopedic residency at Emory University in Atlanta.

Following completion of residency, he served in the United States Air Force, stationed at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where he treated Service Members and their families stationed in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.  Major McCarthy was selected as the 86th MDS Company Grade Physician of the Year in 2020. He received the Army Commendation Medal for his role in treating injured Marines and civilians during Operation Allied Refuge during the evacuation out of Afghanistan. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Following completion of his service in the US Air Force, Dr. McCarthy completed a Sports Medicine and Shoulder Fellowship at the University of Colorado, training with national and international leaders in knee and shoulder surgery, as well as pediatric sports medicine surgery. During this time, he also worked as the team Physician for the 2023 World Champion Denver Nuggets, the Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids, University of Colorado football and basketball, and the Colorado Mammoth.
