Your Hip Specialists

HIP OVERVIEW

Peachtree Orthopedics’ hip surgeons and specialists provide a wide range of treatments for hip problems and injuries. In addition to pain, symptoms that patients complain of include tightness, stiffness, limping, and hip joint popping or clicking. Hip pain often times waxes and wanes, with improvement and worsening varying over time. Symptoms commonly worsen with activity, and night pain can affect sleep.

COMMON HIP CONDITIONS

Arthritis

In patients over fifty, the main cause of hip pain is arthritis. X-rays and a physical examination are often times sufficient to make an arthritis diagnosis. Arthritis has different causes including osteoarthritis, which is by far the most common, and other rheumatological diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Arthritis can be treated with non-operative treatments such as medications, activity modification, injections, and supplements. Patients who fail nonoperative treatment for arthritis may be a candidate for hip replacement, otherwise known as hip arthroplasty.

Hip replacement surgery

During hip replacement surgery, the damaged sections of your hip joint are replaced with parts constructed of metal, ceramic or very hard plastic. Hip replacement surgery performed by our top hip surgeons has a high success rate and is one of the most common surgeries performed internationally across all specialties.

Labral tears

In younger patients without arthritis, labral tears are the most common causes of hip pain. In the early stage, labral tears are associated with damage to the articular cartilage next to the tear. Later in the disease process, this injury may progress to diffuse arthritic damage over time. Many hip injuries can occur while playing sports, including tendon strains (pulls), with the most common locations being hamstrings, quadriceps, and abductor muscles.
