BIOLOGICS OVERVIEW

Orthobiologics: Natural Healing for Lasting Relief

Biologic medicine uses your body’s own cells to stimulate healing, reduce inflammation, and can help slow down cartilage breakdown. These advanced treatments work with your natural biology to repair injuries, relieve pain, and restore movement- without relying only on surgery or long-term medications.

If you suffer from arthritis, ligament or cartilage injuries, tendonitis, inflammation, muscle tears, or other orthopedic conditions where surgery may be premature or not the best option, OrthoBiologics therapy may be right for you.

Our treatments harness the body’s own healing potential to:

  • Stimulate repair of injured areas
  • Reduce pain and inflammation
  • Support cartilage and tissue health
  • Help you recover faster with less downtime

Orthobiologics offer safe and effective solutions designed to help you heal naturally and get back to the activities you love.

BIOLOGICS INFORMATION

Discover the power of biologic-advanced, minimally invasive therapies designed to help your body heal faster and with less pain than traditional surgery. At Peachtree Orthopedics, we offer cutting-edge treatments including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), Lipogems, Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M), and Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC). These biologic procedures tap into your body’s own healing potential, delivering results that restore mobility, reduce discomfort, and get you back to living life sooner.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Your blood holds powerful healing potential- and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy taps into it. Blood is composed of red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. While platelets are best known for their role in clotting, they’re also packed with growth factors-proteins that play a vital role in repairing tissue and accelerating healing. When an injury occurs, your body naturally sends platelets to the site to begin the healing process. PRP therapy enhances this response by delivering a concentrated dose of your own platelets directly to the injured area. The process is simple and minimally invasive. We draw your blood, then use a specialized centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelets while removing unwanted components. The resulting PRP solution is then carefully injected into the area that needs healing- stimulating your body to recover faster and more effectively.

Benefits of PRP:

  • Minimally invasive, in-office procedure
  • Uses your body’s natural healing mechanisms
  • Accelerates tissue repair and reduces inflammation
  • Can be used alone or in conjunction with surgery

Lipogems

Harness your body’s own natural healing potential with Lipogems- FDA cleared technology designed to support tissue repair and recovery using your body’s own fat. Adipose tissue (commonly known as fat) is rich in powerful reparative cells. With Lipogems, we gently harvest a small amount of this fat- typically from your midsection or “love handles”- through a minimally invasive procedure. The fat is then processed in a sterile, single-use device using only saline, without any additives or chemicals. This unique process micro-fragments the fat into smaller clusters, washing away impurities while preserving the natural healing properties. The result? A purified, injectable tissue ideal for supporting repair in injured or damaged areas. Once processed, your physician will inject the Lipogems tissue into the targeted area, where it can help cushion, support, and promote the healing of your orthopedic condition. For patients with multiple areas of concern, the system allows for versatile application- all in one convenient procedure.

Why Lipogems?

  • Minimally invasive
  • Uses your own tissue
  • No general anesthesia or overnight hospital stay (this procedure can be in conjunction with surgery though)
  • Supports healing and recovery naturally

Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M)

If you’re suffering from joint pain caused by arthritis, Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M) therapy offers a natural way to protect your joints and slow cartilage degeneration. A2M is a powerful protein found naturally in your blood. Its job? To act as a protease inhibitor- binding to and neutralizing harmful enzymes (called proteases) that break down cartilage and contribute to arthritis. While A2M is abundant in the bloodstream, it’s normally too large to reach the joints in therapeutic amounts. That’s where this advanced treatment comes in. Using specialized centrifuge and filtration process, we extract and concentrate A2M directly from your own blood. This high-dose A2M solution is then precisely injected into the affected joint, where it binds to destructive enzymes, stops further cartilage breakdown, and helps flush these damaging substance out of your body.

Benefits of A2M:

  • Derived from your own blood= 100% natural
  • Targets the root cause of cartilage loss
  • Reduces inflammation and joint pain
  • Helps preserves and protect joint health over time

Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC):

BMAC is a powerful, non-surgical therapy that uses your own bone marrow to help repair and regenerate damaged tissue- especially in joints, tendons, and bones. Bone marrow, found in the center of large bones, is rich in mesenchymal stem cells, growth factors, and platelets- the body’s natural healing components. These stem cells are pluripotent, meaning they have a unique ability to transform into many different types of tissue, including cartilage, bone, muscle, and tendon. With BMAC therapy, we carefully extract a small amount of bone marrow- typically from the hip/pelvis bone (iliac crest)- then process it to concentrate the most potent regenerative elements. This concentrated solution is then injected directly into the injured area, jumpstarting the body’s natural repair process.

How does BMAC work:

  • Delivers high levels of healing stem cells and growth factors
  • Stimulates tissue regeneration and repair
  • Reduces inflammation and pain at the injury site
  • Offers a minimum invasive alternative to surgery
  • The procedure is performed in the Operating Room under anesthesia.

  • You may take Tylenol (Acetaminophen) to help with the pain during this time.
  • Biologic treatments are minimally invasive and involve little downtown, but we do ask:
  • No strenuous activity for 2 weeks following the procedure.
  • No diet restrictions. We ask you to increase your water intake 2-3 days before your procedure. We also ask that you eat breakfast and lunch before your procedure, unless you are having a procedure in conjunction with surgery (follow surgery instructions).

This elevation will help determine the most effective, personalized treatment plan-whether that involves a biologic therapy or another orthopedic solution.
  • Call 404-355-0743 to get scheduled with one of our providers.

Are there risks with biological procedures?

  • Significant complications are highly unlikely. In fact, research shows that while cortisone (steroid) injections may contribute to tissue/cartilage breakdown over time, Biologic treatments are designed to support and strengthen tissue/cartilage healing and slow the breakdown.
  • Some increased pain after the procedure is normal but should be resolved within a few days.
  • As with any injection, there are inherent risks, which may include:
    • Mild bleeding or bruising
    • Increased pain or swelling
    • Tissue irritation or injury
    • Infection (rare)
    • Lack of desired response to treatment
  • The Biologics Team takes every precaution to minimize risk and ensure your safety. We’ll walk you through what to expect and answer any questions before your procedure.

Can I use biologic treatment during surgery?

  • Yes- biologic therapies can be safely and effectively used alongside surgery. In many cases, combining a biologic treatment with a surgical procedure may help enhance healing, reduce inflammation, and improve overall outcomes.
  • Your physician will discuss whether this integrated approach is appropriate for your condition and recovery goals.

How long does it take to see the results?

  • Results vary depending on the treatment and condition. Some patients experience relief within a few days, while others may see a gradual improvement over several weeks or months as the body heals.
  • Typically, within 6-8 weeks you should see/feel results.
